MANCHURIAN DEER HUNTING in SIBERIA
Hunting for a Maral (or Manchurian deer) in the
late autumn and in the winter is more labour-consuming,
but is not less emotional, than " on a roar ".
Most often has use three ways of hunt for a Maral (or
Manchurian deer): from the approach; with dogs; going
by a trace.
After the period of love, bulls of deers start to eat
strenuously to supply the forces spent during pairing
before cover of a deep snow. In the late autumn, deers
gravitate to sites with a rich herbage. As favourite places
of feeding glades among a large wood, without wood slopes
of flat mountains serve growing to fumes. When it becomes
difficult to extract a forage from under a deep snow,
deers pass on to a meal by branches of trees. Maral and
Manchurian deer from rather open places move to tall-trunked
woods with well advanced underbrush. Than more deeply
a snow, the deers less move for feeding and rest, them
place is limited to rather small areas.
Short time after the marriage period before cover of a
deep snow can be used for hunting from the approach. This
way, despite of seeming similarity to hunting " going
on a trace ", essentially differs from last. First
of all an indispensable condition for such hunting is
well crossed or mountainous relief. Only in a hilly terrain
it is possible to expect to see an animal from apart and
much earlier, than he will find out the hunter. To start
to search for fed animals it is necessary with a dawn.
The hunter with the huntsman examines by the binocular
of a place of their probable feedings. Having seen an
animal, it is necessary to begin immediately the cautious
approach to have time to approach on a correct shot before
the deer will cease to be fed and will go on rest. These
animals begin feed when still darkly, and in the autumn
dawn late, therefore the hunting, begin in morning from
a dawn, remains no more than 2-2,5 hours. Therefore, if
a feeding Maral (Manchurian deer) have noticed late, and
the approach to him will occupy a lot of time it is better
to try to find him again already in second half of day
or the next morning. The second feeding within day, begins
for 3-4 hours prior to a sunset, and hunting can be continued.
Before to begin the cautious approach to the noticed animal,
it is necessary to define a direction of a wind. It is
better, if it pulls from him or even lateral. The deer
feeds in movement and his moving during the approach to
him should be taken into account, as the hunter frequently
goes, not seeing an animal. As well as other deers, the
Marals and the Manchurian deer have good sense of smell,
hearing are superb advanced. Hunting for them, it is impossible
to neglect any of elements of masking. The suit should
be under color of a surrounding background and to not
rustle. Footwear - to provide silent movement. All equipment
- the weapon, the binocular, ammunition belt should be
so to settle down on the case or in hands of the hunter
to exclude clattereven if it is necessary to creep crawl
on one's stomach on stones. Hunting in such a way on a
Maral or Manchurian deer, it is necessary to be ready
to distant shooting. At presence of a good carbine it
is better to stop for two hundred meters up to an animal.
To conceal closer simply does not follow because of fear
to frighten off an animal. For hunting from the approach,
at a high probability of a distant shot the best can count
the weapon under powerful cartridges, such as .300Win
Mag.300Weath Mag, 8õ68S, 8õ73S, 8õ75S, and others, close
to them under ballistic characteristics.
Hunting " going on a trace " essentially differs
from other ways of huntings by that, that she is individual.
Its productivity completely depends on that, as far as
the hunter on a trace of an animal can silently move to
find him on rest or to approach to feeding animal if to
see him from afar it is impossible. Indispensable condition
for such hunting is rainy weather - a snow, a wind. And,
naturally, good knowledge of district and places where
animals inhabits. At " going on a trace " of
animal, of movement of the hunter should not make any
characteristic sounds, at least that can be lost in noise
of a wind. A ski should be necessarily upholstered with
a skin of foot of deers to exclude rather sonorous contact
of branches of trees about edges of ski. After an output
on hunting by task of the hunter will be as soon as possible
to intercept traces of animals going on a rest. Some attributes
can help to determine it. The replete animals go easy,
not distracting in order to eat branches, by equal, slow
step. If it is group often animals go a trace in a trace.
The following attribute is a freshness of a trace. Having
met a fresh trace in 11 o'clock in the afternoon, it is
possible to be almost confident, that he conducts on rest.
Not frightened animals seldom go far from a place of feeding,
therefore, if you have found a trace, to go over it is
necessary very slowly and not afraid to late. It is necessary
to look attentively ahead of itself, but also over the
sides. At noise of a wind and more in the snowfall limiting
visibility, animals, even having noticed slowly moving
of a silent person, do not hurry to escape afar, and rise
and try to define a degree of approaching danger, enabling
thus to the hunter to do a shot.
