Hunting for the Transcaspian red sheep
(ovis vignel arkal)
Red sheep is the most beautiful from this kind of rams.
It also has a large population in Turkmenia. Hunting places
for this ram are the mountain ridges of the Kopet Dagh
on the border of Turkmenistan with Iran and Afghanistan.
The Kopet Daghs mountains are not very high, and only
the mountain Rize reaches 2942 meters, usually the height
of mountains is between 300 - 2000 meters. Mountains are
with numerous gorges and valleys. Summer is hot and dry
with high temperature, the rivers dry up. The climate
is dry subtropical. Rams live in gorges where there is
grass and they hide among abrupt and sharp stones. Hunters
ride horses up to the hunting place and dismount a kilometer
before the place where rams have a rest. Rams are quite
timid, cautious and observant. If rams feel hunters, they
run away at a speed of up to 60 km / hour. It is important
for the hunter to rise silently on a rock to look round.
At dawn, it is important for the hunter to choose a ram,
take aim well, and then to fire a shot at the risen ram.
Horns of the ram are thick and curved. The expected trophy
is about 33 - 36 to 40 inches. The trunk size of rams
is one meter and more, and weight is approximately 80
kg.
